Actor, guionista y director desde mediados de los anos 10, su filmografia en el ultimo de los cometidos citados supera el centenar y medio de titulos, entre largometrajes y peliculas de una o dos bobinas. Toca todos los generos, pero parece sentirse mas a gusto en la comedia. No es de los realizadores cuyo recuerdo perdura, y si tenemos en cuenta unicamente los westerns, hay que decir que solo los tres primeros resultan destacables. 1902-1978Smith el silencioso y Tres tejanos (particularmente este ultimo) son dos westerns modelicos, que hacen lamentar que este ingles de nacimiento, actor en sus anos jovenes, autor mas tarde de una obra breve pero sustanciosa, no haya dirigido mas peliculas del genero que otras dos, la ultima de ellas tambien la ultima de su filmografia. Aunque nunca le ha acompanado la fama que su buen hacer hubiera acon sejado, Leslie Fenton es un talento que seria aconsejable descubrir. Tres tejanos, como se ha apuntado, es una pelicula de notable calidad, que podria formar parte, sin esfuerzos, de una antologia de los mejores westerns sonoros jamas realizados. Estudiante de leyes en la California’s Loyola Mary mount, entra en Universal como meritorio. Tra baja en todos los oficios hasta que se hace ayudante de direccion en 1934 y por fin director en 1944. Karl son es bastante mas de lo que su re ducido prestigio podria hacer sospechar. Director de dramas intensos, peliculas negras y criminales que se acercan a negras, lo mejor de su obra lo realiza en los 50, particularmente Calle River, 99 (99 River Street, 1953), El imperio del terror (The Phe nix City Story, 1955) y Cara cortada (The Scar face Mob, 1959). Lamen tablemente naufrago al final de su ca rrera, dirigiendo algunos filmes tristemente ba nales.
